While tummy tucks are a popular cosmetic procedure, not everyone is a good candidate. Here are some factors that may make someone a good candidate for a tummy tuck procedure:
Excess skin: Candidates for a tummy tuck typically have excess skin in the abdominal area that cannot be eliminated through diet and exercise alone.
Abdominal muscle laxity: Candidates for a tummy tuck may also have abdominal muscle laxity, which can result from pregnancy or significant weight loss.
Good overall health: Candidates for a tummy tuck should be in good overall health and have no underlying medical conditions that could interfere with the healing process.
Stable weight: Candidates for a tummy tuck should have a stable weight and be at or near their ideal body weight.
Realistic expectations: Candidates for a tummy tuck should have realistic expectations about what the procedure can achieve and be willing to follow postoperative instructions to ensure the best possible outcome.
Patients who undergo a tummy tuck procedure can expect to see a significant improvement in the appearance of their midsection. A tummy tuck is designed to remove excess skin and fat from the abdominal area and tighten the underlying muscles, resulting in a flatter, more toned midsection. Here are some specific results that patients can expect after a tummy tuck:
Here is a general overview of how a tummy tuck procedure is typically performed:
Anesthesia: The patient is given anesthesia to ensure their comfort throughout the procedure.
Incision: The surgeon makes an incision in the lower abdominal area, usually from hip to hip, just above the pubic bone.
Separation of skin and fat: The surgeon separates the skin and fat from the underlying abdominal muscles.
Muscle tightening: The surgeon tightens the abdominal muscles by suturing them together to create a firmer and more toned midsection.
Removal of excess skin and fat: The surgeon removes any excess skin and fat from the abdominal area, creating a smoother and flatter appearance.
Incision closure: The surgeon closes the incision using sutures, surgical tape, or skin adhesives.
Recovery: After the procedure is complete, the patient is monitored closely in the recovery room and then discharged with specific post-operative instructions to follow.
It is important to note that there are different types of tummy tuck procedures, including traditional, mini, and extended tummy tucks, and the specific technique used may vary depending on the patient’s individual needs and goals.
Visthetic Surgery Institute & MedSpa™ has a state-of-the-art surgery center. The surgery center measures 5000 ft.² and has three operating rooms, a six-bed recovery area, and three pre-op rooms.
Patients can choose from the following choices for anesthesia: local, local with IV sedation, twilight, or general. 98% of patients request general anesthesia. This decision is between the patient and the anesthesiologists. The anesthesiologist will call the patient the day before the procedure to answer all questions concerning anesthesia care.
In the pre-op room, you will be prepped by the operating room RN and anesthesiologists. Dr. Yamini will then use a surgical marker on the skin to delineate exactly what is to be done during the tummy tuck procedure.
You should expect some bruising, swelling and pain after your procedure. It is normal to experience numbness, specifically around the treated areas; this will go away in time.
We will prescribe pain medication to control any discomfort. If you begin to have severe pain post-surgery and during your recovery period, please contact us immediately.
Recovery after a tummy tuck can vary depending on the extent of the procedure, the patient’s individual health, and other factors. Here is a general overview of what recovery may look like after a tummy tuck:
It is important for patients to follow all post-operative care instructions and attend all scheduled appointments to ensure a safe and successful recovery after a tummy tuck.
In general, the results of a tummy tuck can last for many years, and some patients may even enjoy their new look for a lifetime. However, it is important to note that the longevity of the results can vary depending on the individual and other factors, such as:
