Who is a good candidate for a breast reduction?

Breast reduction surgery can be a life-changing procedure for women who experience physical discomfort and emotional distress due to excessively large breasts. Good candidates for breast reduction surgery are those who:

  1. Experience chronic pain in the neck, back, or shoulders due to the weight of their breasts

  2. Have skin irritation or rashes under their breasts

  3. Have difficulty finding clothes that fit properly due to the size of their breasts

  4. Feel self-conscious or embarrassed about the size of their breasts

  5. Have breast asymmetry or uneven breasts

  6. Have difficulty participating in physical activities or exercising due to the size of their breasts.

It’s important to have realistic expectations and to discuss your goals with your surgeon. They will evaluate your medical history, examine your breasts, and help you determine if breast reduction surgery is right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is this procedure performed?

Breast reduction surgery is typically performed under general anesthesia and involves the following steps:

  1. Incisions: The surgeon will make incisions on the breast in a specific pattern, depending on the extent of the reduction and the patient’s anatomy. The most common incision patterns are the anchor, the vertical, and the circular incision.

  2. Tissue removal: The surgeon will remove excess breast tissue, fat, and skin to reduce the size of the breasts. They will also reshape the remaining tissue to create a more aesthetically pleasing breast shape.

  3. Nipple repositioning: The surgeon will reposition the nipple and areola to a higher position on the breast, which is proportionate to the new breast size.

  4. Incision closure: The surgeon will close the incisions with sutures and may also place drains to remove excess fluid.

  5. Dressings: The surgeon will apply dressings and a compression garment to the breasts to support the new breast shape and reduce swelling.

The procedure typically takes two to four hours to complete, depending on the extent of the reduction and the patient’s individual anatomy.

What can I expect during the procedure?

Surgery Center
Visthetic Surgery Institute & MedSpa™ features a Medicare Certified state-of-the-art surgery center, measuring over 5,000 square feet.

Anesthesia
General is the anesthesia of choice. This decision is between the patient and the anesthesiologists. The anesthesiologist will call the patient the day before the procedure to answer all questions concerning anesthesia care.

Pre-Op
In the pre-op room, you will be prepped by the operating room RN and anesthesiologists. Your surgeon will then use a surgical marker on the skin to delineate exactly what is to be done during the procedure.

Post-Op
You should expect some bruising, swelling and pain after your procedure. It is normal to experience numbness, specifically around the breasts. This will go away in time.

We will prescribe pain medication to control any discomfort. If you begin to have severe pain post-surgery and during your recovery period, please contact us immediately.
