Chin augmentation is a surgical procedure that is designed to enhance the size and shape of the chin. The procedure typically takes about one to two hours and is performed under local anesthesia with sedation or general anesthesia.
There are two main approaches for chin augmentation: with implants or using fat grafting. With implant-based chin augmentation, a small incision is made either under the chin or inside the mouth to create a pocket where the implant will be placed. The implant is then inserted and secured in place with sutures.
With fat grafting, a small amount of fat is harvested from another area of the patient’s body, typically the abdomen or thighs, and purified before being injected into the chin area to add volume and improve the shape.
After the procedure, patients will typically experience some swelling and bruising in the treated area. Discomfort and mild pain may also occur, but can be managed with pain medication prescribed by your surgeon. Most patients can resume normal activities within a week or two, although strenuous exercise and physical activity should be avoided for several weeks.
After a chin augmentation procedure, patients can expect some swelling, bruising, and mild pain or discomfort around the chin and neck area. Your surgeon will provide you with post-operative instructions to follow, including how to care for the incision site and manage any discomfort.
In the first few days following the surgery, you may need to rest and limit your physical activity. You should avoid bending over or lifting heavy objects to prevent any strain on the chin area. Most patients can return to work and their regular activities within one to two weeks, depending on the extent of the procedure and your individual healing process.
It is normal to experience some numbness or tightness around the chin and lower lip area after the surgery, which should gradually improve over time. You may also need to follow a soft or liquid diet for a few days to avoid putting pressure on the chin area.
